Understanding and managing cultural differences with employees when starting Mexico manufacturing operations is key in ensuring not only the quality of your products, but also the safety of your employees and the long-term success of your operations. Here are three recommendations to help your company adapt to the cultural context of Mexico manufacturing teams:

View your company as a family. Similar to China, in Mexico the focus is on the collective good rather than individual needs (as is the case in the United States). This means that people are more likely to accept authority in order to avoid conflict, especially with one’s superiors, when they feel that they are being treated with courtesy and kindness at work. By treating your team like a family, with leaders taking on a paternalistic role, and providing benefits that protect and take care of employees’ families, you will win their loyalty and strengthen your team as a whole.

Include celebrations as a part of workplace culture. Create rituals to commemorate your team’s accomplishments and acknowledge seniority. Likewise, do not underestimate the importance of cultural holidays and find ways to work around these when making schedules, as well as develop traditions to show solidarity with your team. This can include things like honoring mother’s with a special gift or meal on Mother’s Day, or providing a toy for employees’ children on Children’s Day.



Similar to cultural value placed on celebrations and family, it is also important to respect and allow for leisure time and give importance to pleasure and seeking positive emotions in your organization. This can include team-building activities such as sports activities, as well as providing employees with benefits that can allow them to indulge in experiences (concerts, sporting events or meals). It is also important to note that most employees do not work Sundays, and it is considered as a time to rest, eat, drink, and spend quality time with their family.
