On her official visit to Taiwan, Governor Maru Campos, accompanied by Luis Lara Cruz, Co-Chairman of the American Industries Board, met with senior executives from TSMC and UMC, two global leaders in semiconductor manufacturing. Campos highlighted Chihuahua’s strategic advantages as an ideal location for semiconductor operations and invited the companies to explore the state as part of their expansion plans.
On the second day of her official visit to Taiwan, Governor Maru Campos, alongside Luis Lara Cruz, Co-Chairman of the Board, held pivotal discussions with executives from United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).
TSMC, the world’s top semiconductor producer, holds 56% of the global market share for semiconductors used in computers, mobile devices, vehicles, and aircraft. During a tour of the TSMC Innovation Museum, Governor Campos emphasized Chihuahua’s proximity to Arizona, where TSMC recently launched a new plant, making the Mexican state an ideal site for future operations in alignment with the growing nearshoring trend.
UMC, another prominent player, holds a 7% market share in semiconductor production. During meetings, Campos and Lara Cruz emphasized Chihuahua’s competitive advantages, particularly in Ciudad Juárez, a city with a rich history in electronics manufacturing and a key participant in chip production processes.
Campos extended a formal invitation to the executives to visit Chihuahua and assess its potential within the broader semiconductor ecosystem, linking Mexico and the U.S. “We are ready to work together,” she assured.
As part of the trip, the governor also visited the Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association (TSIA) and toured Taiwan’s industrial parks. The meetings underscored the opportunities in Chihuahua, given the absence of a significant presence from these tech giants in Mexico.
The State Government highlighted several competitive advantages for investors, including USMCA’s free trade provisions, Chihuahua’s geographic proximity to the U.S., attractive investment incentives, and established regional supply chains.
Chihuahua’s proactive approach in courting semiconductor giants shows its commitment to capitalizing on global trends like nearshoring, solidifying its position as a hub for high-tech industries.
